Earlier this week, we came across suggestions that Volkswagen is developing an mini-SUV, and according to Autoblog, this crossover will join VW’s off-roader portfolio alongside the Touareg and Tiguan. The North American market with receive an exclusive new seven-seater as well.
The new models would do well to bolster the German automotive giant’s footprint in that segment and reinforce Volkswagen’s resolve to become the world’s top manufacturer by 2018.
The smaller vehicle, likely to be based on the current Polo, will be positioned below the Tiguan. The larger three-row seven-seater will also not be a stretched version of the Touareg, but rather based on the US-spec Passat. This ties in with CEO Martin Winterkorn’s comments at the Paris Motor Show that the new crossover for the North American market is a strong candidate for production at the Chattanooga, Tennessee, plant.
With the release dates for both vehicles expected to be late next year or 2014, and rumours that the American crossover could make an appearance as soon as the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January, expect lots of news about VW’s new crossover in the weeks and months to come.
