BMW has revealed official images and information on its Paris Motor Show-bound Concept Active Tourer. As indicated by a very detailed press release and a machine that looks very production ready, this Concept could be a thinly disguised preview of the upcoming 1 Series GT. With a wheelbase of 2 670 mm and an overall length of 4 353 mm and width of 1 834 mm, this model will compete in the premium small car market, but is aimed at buyers who also want space and interior flexibility, without sacrificing BMW’s traditional virtues of handling and performance.
What really makes the Concept Active Tourer unique is its ultra-efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain. This sees a turbocharged 1,5-litre three-cylinder engine mated with a lithium-ion powered electric system. The total output is rated at 140 kW/200 N.m and BMW claims a 0-100 km/h sprinting ability of below eight seconds. Unlike any previous BMW, power goes to the front wheels. BMW claims an all-electric driving range of around 30 km and a combined cycle fuel consumption figure of 2,5 L/100 km.
BMW has not released any interior photographs, but the press release details a number of features, including a “Cool Shade” roof which is similar to Mercedes-Benz’s Magic Sky Control roof on the SLK, and which allows the driver to change the opacity of the glass roof at the push of a button. The cabin will also feature a number of digital displays – an eight-inch instrument panel display, an optional full-colour head-up display (HUD) and a very large 10,25 inch centre hangdown section display.
