Volkswagen will reveal a fire-breathing V6 version of the MkVII Golf GTI at this year’s Wörthersee fan meet in Austria.
This once-off model is in a similar vein to the mighty GTI W12-650 that blew the crowds away at the 2007 event by cracking the 0-100 km/h run in 3,7 seconds thanks to a twelve-cylinder engine packing 478 kW and 720 N.m.
Underpinned by the same MQB platform doing service in the standard car, the Volkswagen Golf Design Vision GTI showcases an all-new 3,0-litre twin-turbo V6 engine, supposedly earmarked for a number of future models. Mounted transversely in the Vision GTI, this powerplant develops 370 kW and 560 N.m, the latter coming in at just 2 000 r/min.
The Vision GTI utilizes an uprated twin-clutch transmission that channels drive to all four corners. According to Volkswagen the once-off model is capable of cracking 100 km/h from standstill in 3,9 seconds and hit a top speed of 305 km/h.
In addition to previewing the company’s future engine technology, Volkswagen brand design boss, Klaus Bischoff, claims that the Vision GTI will showcase a number of design elements destined for the 40th Anniversary GTI model that will emerge in 2014.
