BMW has released all the details about its i3 EV that will make its public debut later this month. The i3 will be the first series-produced vehicle from BMW’s i brand.
This new full EV will get its power from a rear-mounted electric motor that generates 125 kW and 250 N.m of torque. This motor helps the i3 go from zero to 100 km/h in 7,2 seconds. It has a limited top speed of 150 km/h. Thanks to the 22 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, there is a range of 130 to 160 km in everyday driving.
For those who need to travel further than 160 km, there is an i3 with a range-extending engine. This model comes fitted with a 25 kW two-cylinder 650 dm3 petrol engine that is housed above the rear axle. This extends the range to 300 km.
As with most EVs, there are various ways to charge the battery. When connected to a public fast-charging station, it takes between 30 minutes to an hour to reach 80 per cent capacity. A full charge takes six hours when hooked up to the BMW I Wallbox, while a regular household electrical socket allows for an eight-hour charge before it’s full.
Carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic makes up the passenger cell and has helped to keep the curb weight of the i3 at a low 1 195 kg.
