FINALLY, THE NEW GALLARDO [with video]

Ahead of the official unveiling at Geneva motor show in March, the official images of Lamborghini’s much-anticipated Gallardo replacement – the Huracán LP 610-4 – have been released.

For Lamborghini fans hoping for something as radical looking as the Gallardo was when it launched some 10 years ago, the Huracán may be something of a disappointment. The new car is clearly carrying a fistful of Aventador genes and it looks very much like a slightly softened version of its angular bigger brother. And that means there’s nothing unexpected about this car – it’s a familiar look, which is a pity, especially given the wild Sesto Elemento and Veneno limited edition specials Lamborghini has shown us over the last year.

Based on the same Modular Sports car Chassis (MSS) as the next-gen Audi R8, the Huracán has a super-rigid aluminium spaceframe that – even without the swathes of carbon-fibre used by the Aventador – still weighs in at around 30kg less than the  Gallardo.

What we do know is that the Huracán is to be powered by an updated version of the Gallardo’s naturally aspirated 5,2-litre V10 engine. Power is up from the Gallardo’s 419 kW to 448 kW (at 8 250 r/min) while torque has increased by 20 N.m to 560 N.m at the same 6 500 r/min engine speed.

Lamborghini claim a 0-100 km/h time of 3,2 secs, which is 0,2 secs up on the Ferrari 458 Italia. This is thanks to an all new seven-speed twin-clutch LDF (Lamborghini Doppia Frizione) gearbox  and, of course, the fact that the Huracán is all-wheel drive as opposed to the rear-wheel drive Ferrari, which does give it an off-the-like advantage. 200 km/h is reached in 9,9 seconds and top speed is “over” 325 km/h.

This engine, says Lamborghini, will also comply to new Euro 6-emissions legislation.
