The battle for Nürburgring supremacy recently took a turn at Porsche, McLaren and Ferrari. The result was that only Porsche has confirmed its lap time for its 918 hypercar.
However, now the focus is on Renault after Seat did an official time of 7:58 seconds with its Leon Cupra – bascially Seat’s (also under Volkswagen’s wing) version of the Golf R. This means that Seat took the record from Renault for the fastest front-wheel drive car around the Nürburgring.
Renault accepted the challenge and launched the hashtag #Under8 campaign online.
As the picture illustrates, Renault is working with these manufacturers of tyres, exhaust and suspension systems to achieved a faster lap time.
Renault is continuing to tease us though. This latest image clearly shows the tip of a new Akrapovič exhaust system with a neat carbon-fibre tip. There is no claims as yet on a power increase or weight reduction on the standard item, but Autoevolution.com has done some informative research. It seems that on a Golf GTI an Akrapovič system unleashes 8,6 kW and saves 5,6 kg. This being the first step, we wonder what improvement Öhlins and Michelin will bring to the game.
Renault promised that there would be an official release on 16 June.
