Bentley has announced that the iconic W12 engine is set to be retired in the next few months but its V8 hybrid successor will arrive as the firm’s pinnacle powertrain, courtesy of more power than before.

As it stands, the newly introduced Batur Convertible is the last Bentley vehicle to feature the iconic and powerful 6.0-litre twin-turbo W12 engine. Looking ahead, Bentley, like many others, is required to embrace a downsized and electrified future which has resulted in the British automaker introducing the “Ultra Performance Hybrid” as its new flagship powertrain. Not Bentley’s first attempt at hybrid power, the newcomer undoubtedly has large shoes to fill.

The Ultra Performance Hybrid will replace the W12 with a V8-based petrol engine, bolstered by electric power. Although it has four fewer cylinders, the hybrid system promises even more horsepower when the electric motor’s contribution is included. Bentley projects the combined output to exceed 551 kW, surpassing the Batur Coupe and Convertible. It also has 67 kW more than the Flying Spur Speed and Continental GT Speed models which were equipped with the 12-cylinder motor.
Though Bentley hasn’t revealed exact torque figures, the company indicates it will have a four-figure output, likely around 1 000 N.m. The firm also adds that the torque will be available across a broader rpm range compared to the W12. Bentley describes the Ultra Performance Hybrid as its “most dynamic, most responsive” powertrain, also promising it will be “the most efficient” due to the hybrid technology. An unspecified battery pack is expected to provide 80 km of electric-only range based on the WLTP cycle.

The Ultra Performance Hybrid will be the heart of a new family of “daily supercars” without the W12, which has been produced in 105 000 units over the past 20 years. During its lifespan, the W12 gained almost 40% more power while reducing fuel consumption by 25%. As stated above, Bentley expects the newcomer to continue this tradition.
This electrified and downsizing shift isn’t the first to be seen in the high-end automotive industry. Firms like Audi and Lamborghini, have made news with the announcement that the V10 motor would be retired. In the same automotive group, the W16 Chiron will have a V16 instead.
