Mercedes-Benz has released official images and video of its Concept GLA crossover. This A-Class-based crossover will make its official public debut at the Shanghai Auto Show later this month.
Looking like a bulked-up A-Class, the Concept GLA aesthetic highlights include a prominient grille, swept-back headlamps and a brace of strong character lines running from the bonnet of the vehicle to its tail, A-Class inspired taillights, dual exhaust pipes, a large roof spoiler and 20-inch wheels. The inside looks very futuristic with details such as air vents between the two front seats, a large display screen, and a spaceship-like facia that’s inevitably going to be toned down for production viability purposes.
Underpinned by the same MFA platform that forms the foundations of the new A-Class, B-Class and CLA models, the Concept GLA is 4383 mm long, 1 978 mm wide and 1 579 mm high.
Under the bonnet sits a 2,0-litre four-cylinder turbopetrol engine lifted from the A250 Sport that delivers 155 kW/350 kW. Drive is sent to all four wheels via Mercedes-Benz’s 7G DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission.
“The Concept GLA is a compact SUV that combines its sporting spirit with the all-round qualities of a tough, leisure-time companion,” commented Dr Joachim Schmidt, executive vice president Mercedes-Benz Cars, sales and marketing.
The production version of the GLA will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
