Chevrolet is widely known for utilising big V8 engines and in the case of its new Lumina SS it’s no different.
Powered by a 311 kW 6,2-litre V8 engine, the SS, which is in essence a Holden Commodore, is the third vehicle to be designed and built in Australia and shipped to the United States.
The profile of the SS leans more towards that of a family car than a sports car. Upfront it carries the familial fascia that would look fitting on a Cruze, while along the profile and at the rear it’s the same story with simple but effective lines. It boasts 19-inch wheels and dual exhaust tips, while a petite spoiler completes the package.
Drive is fed to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. A manual gearbox is also on offer.
With the aforementioned 311 kW and 562 N.m of torque ready to give the earth some early wrinkles, the SS can rocket from standstill to 100 km/h in 5 seconds, and on to a top speed of 256 km/h.
According to GMSA product communications manager Lunga Ntsendwana however, there are currently no plans to import the new Lumina to market. The local firm has taken the decision to “strengthen its portfolion by focusing its lineup on higher volume sellers, such as the Trailblazer.”
