The venerable Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which was first produced 35 years ago, will be the subject of extensive improvements over the next two years. So much so that it could very well be a new vehicle when it goes on sale in 2017.
The aim of the revisions are mainly to increase cabin room, accommodate for larger seats front and rear, and enhance the G-Class’s stability – all of which will require the updated model to be wider.
Approximately 200 kg will be shed from the G-Class’s overall mass, thanks to the extensive use of aluminum in making the vehicle 100 mm wider. It’s been reported that the new suspension system will employ a three or four-link set-up, and that an electric steering system is also a possibility.
Inside, the facelifted G Class will also be tweaked to not only make it wider, but also a lot more comfortable and premium – using trim borrowed from the C-Class.
In terms of looks, many believe that Mercedes-Benz designers will look to the Ener-G-Force concept car from 2012’s Los Angeles Motor Show for inspiration.
Despite the revisions, it’s also believed that the G-Class will retain its W463 internal code name.
