If the video shot by the guys at EVO magazine is anything to go by, it seems Porsche simply didn’t have the capacity to build a motorsport-inspired Cayman since its inception around 10 year ago. Whatever the reasons were, finally Porsche has released a Cayman for the true driving enthusiast.
Lets first have a look at the specifications.
Called the Cayman GT4, it was developed by the same team that has been responsible for the current and previous generations of 911 GT3s en GT2s.
Sitting behind the car’s occupants is a 3,8-litre, flat-six engine. This engine is based on the one found in the 991 Carrera S, but has been adapted before it was installed in the GT4. It delivers (conservatively, in true Porsche fashion) 283 kW at 7 400 r/min. The redline is at 7 800 r/min. This is only marginally less than the 294 kW it develops in the 911.
Porsche has also decided to only offer a six-speed manual gearbox. The result is a 0-100 km/h acceleration figure of 4,4 seconds and a top speed of 294 km/h.
It is quite clear that the entire car has been improved. It sits 30 mm lower than a standard Cayman. There is a small front splitter and a wing at the rear to help neutralise lift, and offer some downforce at high speeds.
Apart from this, there are several components shared with the much more expensive 991 GT3. These include the wheels (lightweight and forged), ceramic braking system and the front suspension system to name a few. A Clubsport package will also be available. This will include a cut-out switch and a half-cage.
Although at 1 340 kg it weights the same as a Cayman GTS, it is still an impressive feat considering the larger engine and heavier components.
The public unveiling of the Cayman GT4 will take place at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. Expect overseas deliveries to start in the second quarter of 2015 with local introduction shortly thereafter.
Finally, this won’t be a limited numbered model, but as head of GT cars, Andreas Preuninger confirmed Porsche won’t be building thousands of them. If standard Cayman sales are anything to go by, we assume only a few hundred of these GT4s will be build.

The Porsche Cayman GT4 will be priced from R1 136 000.
