Originally introduced in 2013, Subaru has been catering to the performance-oriented market in Japan with track-ready versions of the BRZ. The evolution of these models culminated in the debut of the BRZ Cup Car Basic in 2022, representing a significant step forward in track-focused engineering. This iteration, based on the second-generation BRZ platform, was specifically tailored for a dual-make racing series in Japan, where Toyota and Subaru enthusiasts could showcase their driving prowess.
The BRZ Cup Car Basic boasts enhancements from Subaru’s STi division for optimal performance on the track. Since its inception, the BRZ Cup Car Basic has undergone continuous refinement, staying true to its ethos of providing a no-frills, track-focused driving experience. With each iteration, Subaru’s STi division has fine-tuned the vehicle’s performance characteristics, which has optimised handling and agility on the track.
New additions include the Eyesight Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite, now standard across the entire BRZ lineup, even for models with manual transmissions. This system provides an extra layer of protection for drivers, enhancing their awareness and responsiveness on the track. Additionally, the roll cage has been redesigned with a modified shape and sidebars, accompanied by a 6-point seatbelt for the driver’s safety.

In addition to safety enhancements, Subaru engineers have refined the vehicle’s mechanical components to withstand the rigours of track use. The redesigned roll cage, with its modified shape and reinforced sidebars, provides enhanced protection for the driver in the event of a collision.
The interior remains stripped of luxuries like an infotainment screen while retaining essentials such as speakers. However, the roll cage installation renders the sun visors and side A/C vents unusable, necessitating special floor mats. As with previous models, side and curtain airbags have been removed for track use.
Visually, the BRZ Cup Car Basic retains its predecessor’s appearance, with signature 16-inch black steel wheels. The car is offered in seven colours, with some available at an additional cost. Under the bonnet, the BRZ Cup Car Basic houses a naturally aspirated 2.4-litre boxer engine, producing 173 kW and 250 N.m of torque, consistent with other Japanese-specification BRZ models. Engineers have added an oil cooler and new engine seals to endure the rigours of track use. Power is transmitted solely through a six-speed manual gearbox, with the standard limited-slip differential featuring extra cooling fins.
The Subaru BRZ Cup Car Basic is currently on sale in Japan, starting from ¥3 700 400 (approximately R450 502). This model caters to enthusiasts seeking a no-frills, high-performance driving experience on the track.
