Toyota’s 86 sportscar has been such a headline-grabbing project for the Japanese giant that it now appears to have given the go-ahead for two more performance-oriented models.
In a recent interview the chief engineer on the 86 project, Tetsuya Tada, said that one of these upcoming cars will be even cheaper than the 86 – possibly to be priced at under R200 000 – while the other is a performance flagship, rumoured to be a successor to the marque’s Supra model. It is also rumoured that the Supra successor could make use of hybrid technology, using battery power to boost performance. The former, cheaper model in turn be a spiritual successor to the MR-2 or even Celica.
