Giving us a big clue as to what Volvo’s next-generation XC90 will look like is the company’s latest concept car. Called the Volvo Concept XC Coupe, it will debut at next week’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Clearly carrying DNA from Volvo’s recent Concept Coupe – it’s the second of three concept cars penned by Volvo design chief Thomas Ingenlath – the car highlights the Swedish company’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform. This new platform will be used in the 2015 XC90 and all of their cars bigger than the V40.
The Concept XC Coupe has four individual seats and, says Ingenlath, the interior design was inspired by modern sports equipment and is pitched at people with active lifestyles. To this end, the rear seats fold flat to pack your sports gear and the concept shows off a roof box made of the same plastics featured in the car’s body cladding and trim.
There’s no mention yet of what will power this car or the new XC90, but the powertrains are likely to be a variety of four-cylinder engines that Volvo has introduced into its S/V/XC60 range.
