VW plans 10-speed DSG

Volkswagen has revealed a few details about a 10-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission at the Vienna motor symposium, which formed part of the company’s presentation on future powertrain technology.

At the same event last year, VW Group CEO Martin Winterkorn hinted that the advanced transmission “likely will be used in vehicles with longitudinally mounted gasoline or diesel engines, such as the Touareg SUV and Audi A8 sedan.”

Now, development head Hans-Jakob Neusser has, according to Autocar, stated that the new DSG will be used on both transverse and longitudinal engine layout. Neusser also dropped that the 10-speed transmission would be able to handle torque loads of up to 500 N.m.

The new system will probably be used in more premium products, and is reportedly a key component in increasing the efficiency of future models from the Volkswagen Group by up to 15% by 2020.

In addition, Neusser confirmed that a new twin-turbocharged 2,0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine is also in the pipeline. It develops 176 kW and will debut on the next-generation Passat later this year.
