Proton has taken a significant step in its expansion strategy by unveiling the Proton X90, a hybrid SUV that also marks a first in South Africa as a 7-seater hybrid-assisted SUV. Here are all details of the newcomer.
The X90 is being introduced in four variants namely, Standard, Executive, Premium and Flagship. Across all trim levels, including the base model, the X90 comes with a comprehensive set of standard features. These include 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, daytime running lights, and LED fog lamps, ensuring both style and visibility.
The interior is designed for convenience and comfort, featuring a leather multifunction steering wheel, cruise control, keyless entry and start, fabric seats, and automatic dual-zone climate control. The infotainment system, housed within a 12,3-inch screen, supports voice commands, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth connectivity, and boasts a six-speaker setup.
Safety takes centre stage in the X90, equipped with an impressive array of 14 passive safety features. These include functions such as autonomous parking and road sign recognition. Charging convenience is also a priority, with 9 charging points available. Stepping up to the Executive trim level adds more features, such as automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, a powered tailgate, leatherette upholstery, and a wireless charger. The driver’s experience is enhanced with an LCD driver display, a six-way electronic driver’s seat, and a 360-degree camera for improved visibility.

For those looking for even more luxury and advanced safety features, the Premium trim is available. This includes 19-inch alloys, a hands-free electric tailgate, Nappa leather steering wheel and seats, lumbar support for the driver’s seat and front seat ventilation. Safety is further bolstered with autonomous emergency braking, parking assist, forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist, complemented by additional front parking sensors. The range-topping Flagship model crowns the lineup with a panoramic sunroof, adding an extra touch of openness and spaciousness to the cabin.

Under the skin, the Proton X90 is driven by a power plant that utilizes a 1.5-litre TGDi engine designed in collaboration with Volvo. This engine is paired with a 48V electric motor synergy system, resulting in a combined output of 130 kW and 255 N.m. While specific fuel consumption figures have not been provided, Proton emphasizes that this setup brings benefits such as reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions, enhanced performance and an overall smoother driving experience. The powertrain is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox, and drivers can select from different driving modes including Sport, Eco, and Comfort.
