When it comes to purchasing an SUV locally, there are a lot of different options to choose from. This includes the obvious choices from brands such as Toyota, Ford, and Nissan that offer the reassurance of quality at affordable prices.
While some familiar names line the list of cheapest SUVs on sale in our market, there are also offerings from the likes of Mahindra and BAIC.
1. Mahindra KUV100 Nxt – R167 999
Starting off our list of cheapest SUVs in South Africa, the KUV100 Nxt range now starts at R167 999.
Mahindra has added “new premium finishes” to the higher-end vehicles’ cabins, including redesigned upholstery, piano black accents, and a new temperature control panel. The K8 models get a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system while both the K6+ and K8 KUV100 Nxt versions include EBD, automatic door locks, and an alarm.

2. Suzuki Ignis 1,2 GL – R204 900
The Suzuki Ignis immediately added flair to the CAR garage upon its arrival with its shimmering Blue Pearl metallic paint, contrasting roof-mounted rear spoiler, and gloss black alloy wheels. The white-hued grille, foglamp surrounds, and side decals all contribute to its distinctive styling. Despite the quirky stickers, the top-of-the-line GLX trim on this Ignis look the part but costs a fair amount more.

3. Renault Kiger 1,0 Life – R209 900
The marker of affordable compact crossover is mostly dominated by the Toyota Urban Cruiser but another option looking to make a name for itself in the fiercely competitive segment is the Renault Kiger.
The Nissan Magnite and the new Indian-made crossover that has replaced the Renault Sandero Stepway in our local market both use the CMF-A+ platform from the Renault-Nissan group. The French-badged model, in contrast to its Japanese-owned rival, comes with a choice of two engines and three transmissions all varying in price.
4. BAIC X25 1,5 Comfort – R219 990
This platform, according to BAIC, is a result of its partnership with Mercedes-Benz and is based on that of the first-generation Smart ForFour.
The X25 is available in our market in Comfort and Fashion derivatives. Both of these trim levels can be had with a four-speed automatic or a five-speed manual transmission. The spec levels are distinguished by minor differences in features, and one of the Fashion model’s appealing standard features is an electric sunroof.

The Hyundai Venue 1,2 Motion has been added to the lineup as a new entry-level model to help make the subcompact crossover more appealing to budget conscious buyers. The brand’s naturally aspirated engine is featured in the new model, which has fewer standard features.
Despite the Venue’s potential innocence of any wrongdoing, its entry into the South African market has forced it to stand trial before a jury of talented rivals in a rapidly expanding industry. It needs to convince that it deserves a piece of the lucrative small-crossover market.

7. Toyota Urban Cruiser 1,5 XI – R274 900
The Urban Cruiser, like the Starlet, was unveiled by Toyota South Africa Motors and is based on a Maruti Suzuki-built partnership. The Vitara Brezza, which we previously drove in GLX trim with the highest level of features (though with a manual gearbox). The crossover is outfitted with Suzuki’s four-speed automatic transmission, which is also offered with the Vitara Brezza and is coupled to the K15B engine, just like the small SUV on which it is based. This is an excellent addition to our list of the cheapest SUVs in South Africa.

8. Nissan Magnite 1,0 Turbo Acenta – R287 700
The newly released Nissan Magnite aims to disrupt the rapidly growing small SUV market. The newcomer will compete against the twin Suzuki Vitara Brezzas and the recently released Toyota Urban Cruiser, as well as its own Alliance cousin, Renault’s upcoming Kiger.
The Nissan Magnite, like its competitors, is made in India. It is just under four metres long, has a commendable ground clearance of 205 mm, and has a boot that can hold 336 litres of cargo. Nissan also promises the most “couple distance” in the front row and the most knee room in the back of its cars.

9. Cherry Tiggo 4 Pro 1,5 Urban – R289 900
With an expanding selection of SUVs, Chery has successfully re-entered the South African market in less than a year and is able to contend on this list of cheapest SUVs in South Africa. Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager, Chery South Africa, stated that the company has listened to what customers want and has now added three new models to the lineup. The Tiggo 4 Pro, the device that started it all, was not short on features, to begin with.

10. Kia Sonet 1,5 LX – R296 995
Last on our list of cheapest SUVs in South Africa, due to its blend of jaunty good looks, a sturdy build, and pleasant road manners, the Kia Sonet has garnered a great deal of praise from the driving public since it was introduced to the SA market just over a year ago.
In the market for compact crossovers, where 78% of the models available have turbocharged engines, Sonet’s lack of a turbopetrol engine in its lineup has been a glaring omission despite the company’s diverse range of talent. At the moment, Kia SA has joined the fight with two brand-new cars powered by forced-induction engines.
