BMW has raised the bar on its lauded compact high-performance sports car segment with the unveiling of the new BMW M2. This latest iteration of the M2 not only promises more power but also modest visual updates and a raft of advanced features. Here is what it is all about…

Central to the M2’s enhancements is a 15 kW boost in power, bringing the high-revving six-cylinder in-line petrol engine, featuring M TwinPower Turbo technology, to an impressive 353 kW. This powerhouse is designed to deliver an exhilarating driving experience, underpinned by its increased torque and refined accelerator response, ensuring rapid reactions in all driving modes.

Visually, the new M2 boasts new design accents, including a larger BMW kidney grille and a three-section split lower air intake for optimized cooling. The model-specific LED headlights, reminiscent of the iconic BMW 02 models, add to the car’s updated visuals. The option for an M Carbon roof, reducing the car’s weight and lowering its centre of gravity, can further enhance its agile performance.
Inside, the M2 features the latest BMW Operating System 8.5 and BMW iDrive, presented through a fully digital BMW Curved Display. This system includes a 12.3-inch information display and a 14.9-inch control display, streamlining the control of climate functions and other features. The redesigned instrument panel further reduces buttons, contributing to a sleek, modern cockpit.

The new M2 continues BMW’s tradition of offering a manual gearbox option, alongside the standard eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. This combination of powertrain options ensures that drivers can choose their preferred method of engaging with the car’s impressive performance. The six-speed manual gearbox includes a Gear Shift Assistant for smooth downshifting, enhancing the driving pleasure.
Production of the new BMW M2 will take place at the BMW Group Plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, with the car set to arrive in South Africa in the fourth quarter of 2024. As a reminder, the outgoing iteration comes in at R1 505 988 for the auto while the model with a third pedal requires slightly more outlay coming in at R1 516 334. The updated models will expectedly receive an increase in retail price.
