Unconfirmed is the performance this will be able to deliver to the ground but initial reports hint that it will be able to surpass the outgoing generation’s sub 3 second 0-100 km/h sprint time. Other than straight-line speed, the model will feature larger brakes and rear-wheel steering which will help mask the few extra kilos from the hybrid system.

Expected to debut sometime around July, the M5 will reportedly harness the use of four electric motors which will also allow for up to 100 km of silent, zero-emissions driving. A digital artist has rendered up a possible final production model based on spy shots and teaser images provided by BMW but the motoring world can expect 22-inch wheels, aggressive bodywork and quad tip exhaust pipes when it does eventually arrive.

In addition to the sedan, the German automaker is also tinkering with the creation of a Touring version of the potent model, still serving as a spacious alternative to the high-riding SUVs in the lineup like the XM Red Label. Serving as the sole model on offer in South Africa at the moment, the 520d M Sport will set buyers back R1 247 894 so the full-fat M model would be expected to be double that, possibly even hovering around the R3 million mark.
